Got a Minute?

At one time or another, many of us have wished for more time. I was thinking about time the other morning when this dawned on me. And when I write that something dawns on me, I often mean that literally since much of my lucid thinking happens while sitting along the lake, waiting for the sun to appear. We use the word "time" in so many varied ways.

We do many things with time. We spend it, squander it, save it, wish for it, waste it and covet it. We make time, we give of our time, we take time and we find time. We make timelines, dream of time travel and keep track of our time. We mark time, budget our time and plan our time. We take time to celebrate, time to recognize, time to reflect and time to cry. There's a time to party, a time to mourn, a time to be born and a time to die. Sometimes we want time to speed up, other times, we want it to slow down. We find ourselves waiting for a better time, searching for the right time or feeling sad about the bad times. Time flies and heals all wounds, time and time again.

The concept of time finds its way into our music. Does anyone really know what time it is? Time may change me, but I can't change time. Time after time. Too much time on my hands. Time waits for no one. Bad time. Long time gone. Time to move on. Wasted time. If I had more time, I could probably think of more references. Only for a moment and the moment's gone.

Our society is so time oriented that living in the moment can be a challenge. We think about the past and plan for the future but sometimes forget to appreciate the moments. Few things are as regular as the passing of time. The seconds of each minute and hours of each day progress like clockwork, er, as clockwork. And as I use some time to think, it seems that time equals life. We plan our lives, we may give of our lives, find our life....it seems that most places we say time, more accurately, we mean life. We aren't spending time, we are spending our life. Perhaps I need to be more conscious of this so I make better decisions.

Jim Croce's song, Time in a Bottle, is one of many songs that brings tears to my eyes. It is worth a listen if you haven't heard it or heard it in a while. In my opinion, it is worth the 2:26 of your time.

"But there never seems to be enough time

To do the things you want to do

Once you find them"

If only I could save time in a bottle. As always, I welcome any comments...if you have the time.
